Developed in 1994 to treat epileptic seizures, Gabapentin has been found to treat many other ailments also. Its ability to help with various types of pain and mental illnesses has prompted many health care providers to prescribe this to their needy patients. In 2002, Gabapentin was finally approved to be used for the neuralgic pain following an episode of shingles. There are a few side effects that can develop from using Gabapentin – dizziness, drowsiness and the swelling of extremities. As an off-label drug, it has also been known to help patients who have various alcohol and drug addictions. It is estimated that nearly 90% of all Gabapentin sales are for off-label uses.
