Almost everyone has trouble sleeping at some point. As far as reasons for insomnia go, there are lots of possibilities. A lot of times, it only lasts for a night or two. Often, it can be caused by stress. In fact, you may find yourself losing sleep on the night before a major meeting at work. For some people, though, insomnia is actually a chronic issue.

Trouble falling asleep isn’t the only form of insomnia, though. The true definition of insomnia also includes trouble staying asleep. So, even if you get to sleep fine, if you wake in the night, you may have a form of insomnia.

Remember, too, that you can’t allow yourself to judge how you sleep by how other people sleep. You have to follow your own sleep pattern. Not every person needs the same amount of sleep. So, just figure out how much sleep you personally need each night. If you aren’t reaching that goal, you may have to address your insomnia trouble.

As far as your reasons for insomnia go, there are many possibilities. A lot has to do with how often you have the sleeping problem. Temporary things that could cause insomnia are things like an illness or general stress. You might also have trouble sleeping now and then due to light or noise distractions.

On the other hand, long-term insomnia usually has to do with something a bit more serious. Usually, chronic insomnia is caused by some other physical or mental ailment. Depression is, for example, a common cause of chronic insomnia. Acid reflux, COPD and sleep apnea can also be major contributors.

Certain groups of people run a higher risk of developing insomnia problems. For example, women going through menopause often have a lot of trouble sleeping at night. Since older people’s bodies don’t produce as much of a hormone called melatonin, they can also have trouble sleeping at night. People who work third shift (nights), students and those who often fly across time zones are also at high risk for sleeping problems.

So, it’s good that there are plenty of treatments for insomnia. For example, prescription medications are one possible solution. It’s possible that your doctor may put you on one. Be aware that they can cause some side effects and some of them can be addictive, though.
